The Essential Connectors for a Global Shop Floor.
Making American and Metric Systems Play Nice.
"Metric fittings" is a catch-all term for what you'll find on most equipment built in Europe and Asia. Unlike the JIC or NPT fittings we're used to, "metric" can mean a few different things. The most common type you'll run into is the DIN 2353 / ISO 8434-1 "bite-type" compression fitting. It uses a little cutting ring that bites into the tube to create a hell of a strong seal.
Our main job here is to make your life easier. We manufacture a whole range of rugged, zinc-plated steel adapters that let you cleanly connect the American standards you stock—like JIC, ORFS, and NPT—to the metric ports and lines you find on international machinery. Getting the right adapter is everything. We machine these to spec so you can make a reliable connection without having to cobble something together. Take a look at the adapters below, and read the field guide to figure out exactly what you're dealing with.

The Shop Floor Guide to Metric Threads
Working on a machine from Germany, Japan, or Italy? You're in metric-land. Don't let it throw you. Most of what you'll find boils down to two main systems. Here’s how to tell what you're looking at.
System #1: The DIN 2353 Bite-Type (24° Cone)
This is the big one. It's the most common metric hydraulic fitting in the world. It's a compression fitting that doesn't require flaring the tube.
- How it works: You slide a nut and a little hardened steel ring (a ferrule or "cutting ring") over a piece of straight tubing. When you tighten the nut into the fitting body, the 24° cone inside forces that cutting ring to bite into the steel tube. This creates a super-strong mechanical grip and a metal-to-metal seal.
- How to Spot It: Look for the 24° cone inside the port and the separate nut and ferrule on the tube end. They come in two series: "L" for Light Duty and "S" for Heavy Duty/High-Pressure. The "S" series fittings are beefier.
System #2: Metric Straight Thread with a Seal (Like ORB or BSPP)
This is just like the modern American fittings, but with metric threads. The threads themselves are parallel and only provide clamping force. The seal is done by a separate part.
- How it works: The male fitting has straight threads and uses an O-ring (like an ORB) or a bonded seal washer (like a BSPP) that gets crushed against a machined flat face on the port.
- How to Spot It: You’ll see straight threads and either a groove for an O-ring near the hex, or a shoulder for a bonded seal to sit against. The port it goes into will be smooth and flat around the opening. Common standards are ISO 6149 and DIN 3852.
The Golden Rule: MEASURE, DON'T GUESS.
Metric threads are defined by their diameter and their pitch (the distance between threads), both in millimeters. An M22 x 1.5 thread has a 22mm outside diameter and a 1.5mm pitch. You need a set of calipers and a metric thread pitch gauge to be sure what you have. A lot of metric threads are close in size to American ones, but "close" is not good enough in hydraulics. "Close" is a leak waiting to happen.
