A variety of heavy-duty, zinc-plated carbon steel SAE O-Ring Boss fittings, engineered for high-pressure hydraulic systems.

SAE ORB Fittings Manufacturer for OEM & Wholesale Supply

Steel SAE J1926 O-Ring Boss adapters for North American hydraulic equipment and replacement programs.

SAE ORB Port Adapters for Pumps, Valves, Cylinders and Manifolds

SAE O-Ring Boss (ORB) uses straight UN/UNF threads to retain the fitting while an O-ring seals at the port cavity. This separates thread retention from fluid sealing and makes the connection suitable for serviceable hydraulic ports when the port, stud end, seal material and assembly procedure are correctly matched.

Delphi Fittings manufactures steel ORB adapters in China for OEM, distributor and private-label programs. Brennan specifications are our default dimensional reference for standard catalog parts when the buyer does not provide a controlled drawing. Where a shaped body requires forging, qualified external partners supply the blank; Delphi controls CNC machining, standard zinc plating, sealing-surface inspection and final verification in-house.

SAE ORB Brand and Part-Series Cross-Reference Guide

North American buyers commonly identify ORB adapters by Brennan base series, Parker configuration codes or legacy Aeroquip and Weatherhead numbers. Delphi uses Brennan specifications as the primary reference for standard catalog products unless a customer drawing, approved sample or purchase specification states otherwise. A familiar base number is useful for identification, but it is not enough by itself to establish interchangeability.

Standards and Catalog Reference Hierarchy

ReferenceWhat it establishesHow Delphi applies it
SAE J1926-1Dimensions for inch-thread O-ring boss ports used with adjustable and nonadjustable stud ends and plugsUsed to check the female port interface; the permissible pressure still depends on material, design and operating conditions.
SAE J1926-2 / J1926-3Heavy-duty and light-duty stud-end requirements for fittings entering the SAE J1926-1 portThe applicable stud-end form must be confirmed from the complete part specification rather than inferred from thread size alone.
SAE J51437° flare tube-fitting geometry used on many JIC-to-ORB adapter configurationsApplied to the JIC end of series such as 6400 and 6801; it does not make a JIC end interchangeable with an ORB end.

The suffix is part of the specification. For example, an adjustable elbow, long stud, hollow-hex plug or alternate O-ring material can differ from the same base-series family.

What to Send for an SAE ORB Quote

Send the complete competitor part number, manufacturer, all dash sizes, straight or adjustable stud-end requirement, O-ring compound, mating connection, material, coating, annual quantity and any controlled drawing or sample. Brennan specifications are the default reference for standard Delphi parts; customer-approved drawings and purchase-order requirements take precedence.

Connecting ORB Ports to the Rest of Your Hydraulic System

In real machines, SAE ORB ports rarely live alone. They have to tie into JIC tube lines, ORFS hose ends, legacy NPT pipe work or BSPP valve blocks. That’s where the adapters above earn their keep.

Engineer's Guide to the SAE J1926 ORB System

The O-Ring Boss system is widely used for port connections on North American pumps, valves, cylinders and manifolds. Successful application depends on matching the port, stud end, O-ring and assembly procedure—not merely finding threads that screw together.

Sealing Mechanism: Separating Force from Sealing

The ORB system is superior to tapered threads because it separates two critical functions:

ORB vs. Other Connection Types

Installation Best Practices

  1. Inspect the Port & O-Ring: Ensure the port's machined chamfer is free of debris and scratches. Inspect the O-ring for any nicks or cuts.
  2. Use Compatible Lubrication: If the approved assembly procedure calls for lubrication, use only a clean fluid or lubricant compatible with the O-ring and system medium.
  3. Start by Hand: Engage the fitting without cross-threading. On adjustable stud ends, set orientation using the locknut and backup washer according to the fitting manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Use the Specified Assembly Value: Follow the current drawing or manufacturer's torque/assembly table for the exact size, material, coating and stud-end style. Do not apply one generic torque value across the family.

Zinc-plated steel is a common choice for construction, agricultural and industrial hydraulic equipment. Stainless steel or a different seal compound may be required where corrosion, fluid compatibility or temperature changes the application.

Straight Answers to Common ORB Questions

What's the difference between ORB and NPT threads?

ORB uses straight threads for retention and an O-ring at the port cavity for sealing. NPT/NPTF uses tapered-thread engagement and an approved sealing method. ORB is often preferred for serviceable hydraulic ports, but the correct choice depends on the component design, duty cycle and governing specification.

Are JIC and ORB threads the same? Can they connect?

While they often share the same thread size (e.g., 3/4"-16 for -8), their sealing methods are completely different. JIC seals on a 37° metal-to-metal flare, while ORB uses an O-ring. They are not interchangeable and cannot create a seal with each other without a proper adapter (like our Part #6400).

When should I choose ORB over ORFS fittings?

Use ORB for connecting a tube or hose fitting into a port on a pump, valve, or cylinder. Use ORFS (O-Ring Face Seal) for connecting two tube or hose ends to each other, especially in high-vibration environments. ORB seals ports; ORFS connects lines.

Do I need sealant or Teflon tape on ORB fittings?

Do not apply pipe-thread tape or sealant to an ORB stud end: the seal is made at the O-ring and port cavity, not along the straight threads. Use only the O-ring and any assembly lubricant specified by the approved drawing or fitting manufacturer.

What sizes do SAE ORB fittings come in?

Common sizes are #4 through #20. Threads are straight UN/UNF (e.g., #8 = 3/4"-16). Always match the fitting and port size; sealing occurs at the O-ring/port chamfer, not along the threads.
