Steel SAE J1453 O-Ring Face Seal adapters for North American hydraulic equipment and replacement programs.
SAE J1453 ORFS Adapters for Vibration and Pressure-Cycle Applications
O-Ring Face Seal (ORFS) connections use straight threads to clamp a male face containing an O-ring against a flat female sealing face. The elastomeric seal is separate from the thread and can support reliable service in mobile and industrial hydraulic systems when the connection size, face condition, O-ring compound and assembly procedure are correctly specified.
Delphi Fittings manufactures steel ORFS adapters in China for OEM, distributor and private-label programs. Brennan specifications are our default dimensional reference for standard catalog parts when the buyer does not provide a controlled drawing. Where a shaped body requires forging, qualified external partners supply the blank; Delphi controls CNC machining, standard zinc plating, face and groove inspection, thread verification and final inspection in-house. For corrosive environments, see our stainless steel ORFS line.

ORFS Brand and Part-Series Cross-Reference Guide
North American buyers often identify O-Ring Face Seal adapters by Brennan FS series, Parker Seal-Lok® codes or legacy Aeroquip and Weatherhead numbers. Delphi uses Brennan specifications as the primary reference for standard catalog products unless a customer drawing, approved sample or purchase specification states otherwise. Brand catalogs can identify the connection family, but exact interchangeability requires a complete dimensional and application review.
Standards and Catalog Reference Hierarchy
| Reference | What it establishes | How Delphi applies it |
|---|---|---|
| SAE J1453-1 | ORFS tube-connection details plus common material, performance and test requirements | Used for the face-seal interface and common qualification requirements; assembly performance is limited by the lowest-rated component. |
| SAE J1453-2 / J1453-3 | Connector requirements for metric-based and inch-based stud ends, unions, bulkheads, swivels, sleeves and related configurations | The applicable part and stud-end standard must be identified from the complete connection specification. |
| SAE J1926 and SAE J514 | ORB port/stud-end and 37° JIC flare requirements used on many ORFS conversion adapters | Applied only to the corresponding secondary end; an ORB or JIC thread is not an ORFS sealing face. |
| Brennan ORFS catalog | FS base series, end combinations, size suffixes, materials and published dimensions | Primary dimensional reference for standard Delphi catalog products unless customer-controlled documents override it. |
| Parker Seal-Lok®, Aeroquip® and Weatherhead® catalogs | Brand-specific configurations and legacy replacement identification | Used as cross-reference input, not proof that two complete part numbers are automatically interchangeable. |
Common Brennan-Style ORFS Series
The full suffix matters. Forged-body, long-body, adjustable ORB, seal-material and stainless-steel versions can differ from the same apparent base series.

Using ORFS with JIC, ORB, NPT and BSP Systems
ORFS rarely lives in a vacuum. In real machines, O-Ring Face Seal connections sit next to JIC tube lines, NPT pipe ports, ORB manifolds and sometimes BSP threads on imported equipment. The adapters above are designed to bridge those worlds without creating new leak paths.
- ORFS to JIC: use parts like FS6402 and FS6403 together with our JIC 37° flare fittings when you need to tie ORFS hose assemblies into existing JIC tube runs.
- ORFS to NPT/NPTF pipe threads: straight and elbow adapters such as FS2404, FS2501 and FS2503 let you land ORFS hoses on NPT/NPTF ports without over-tightening tapered threads.
- ORFS to SAE ORB ports: use FS6400, FS6412 and the FS6800 series with our SAE ORB fittings to connect ORFS lines to pumps, valves and cylinder ports that use straight-thread O-ring bosses.
- ORFS to BSPP/BSPT on imported equipment: verify whether the thread is parallel or tapered, then pair this ORFS range with our BSPP or BSPT adapters instead of forcing an NPT part into a British thread.
- When corrosion is the limiting factor: mirror critical lines in our stainless steel ORFS fittings while using zinc-plated carbon steel where the surrounding conditions permit it.
Engineer's Guide to the SAE J1453 ORFS System
O-Ring Face Seal is widely used for fluid lines exposed to vibration, thermal cycling and repeated service. Its performance depends on the complete connection, including the mating face, seal compound, tube or hose assembly and installation procedure.
1. Elastomeric Face Seal
ORFS uses an elastomeric O-ring retained in the male face and compressed against a flat mating surface. This separates sealing from thread engagement and can improve resistance to weepage under vibration when both faces, the O-ring and assembly load meet the applicable specification.
2. Serviceable Face Connection
The flat-face joint separates axially after the nut is released, which can simplify service where adjacent rigid tubes must remain in place. Actual clearance still depends on the hose, tube, fitting geometry and surrounding equipment.
3. System-Level Pressure Selection
ORFS fittings are used in demanding mobile and industrial equipment, but no single pressure rating applies to every size and configuration. The working pressure of the assembly must not exceed the rating of its lowest-rated fitting, tube, hose, seal or mating component.
Critical Installation Notes
- Protect the Faces: Keep both sealing faces and the O-ring groove clean. Reject components with damage outside the limits allowed by the applicable drawing or inspection standard.
- Verify the O-Ring: Confirm size, compound, hardness and condition. Replace the O-ring when required by the approved maintenance procedure, and use only compatible assembly lubricant when specified.
- Follow the Correct Assembly Table: Use the current drawing or manufacturer's torque/assembly value for the exact size, material, coating and connection style rather than applying one generic value across the family.
O-Ring Face Seal (ORFS) - Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ORFS fitting?
An ORFS fitting seals by compressing an O-ring retained in the male face against a flat female mating face. The straight threads provide the clamping load. Performance depends on the complete assembly and operating conditions.
Is ORFS better than JIC for high-vibration hydraulics?
ORFS is often selected for vibration and pressure-cycle applications because it uses a separate elastomeric face seal. JIC uses a 37° metal-to-metal flare and remains appropriate in many systems. The correct choice depends on the existing interfaces, operating conditions, service requirements and applicable specification.
What is the difference between ORB and ORFS?
ORB (O-Ring Boss) is for sealing a fitting into a port (on a pump, valve, etc.). ORFS is for connecting two lines (hose to hose, or tube to hose). Both use an O-ring, but they are designed for different connection points in a hydraulic system.
Do ORFS threads create the seal?
No. The straight threads provide the clamping load that holds the faces together; the primary fluid seal is formed by the compressed O-ring against the mating face.
Which O-Ring should I choose: Buna-N or Viton?
Choose the compound from the system fluid, temperature range, pressure cycle, exposure conditions and customer specification. NBR and FKM are common options, but neither is automatically correct for every hydraulic fluid or temperature. Confirm compatibility with the seal supplier or approved engineering specification.
What sizes are standard for ORFS fittings?
ORFS fittings are commonly available in sizes from -4 (1/4") to -24 (1-1/2"). The size corresponds to the tube or hose OD. You can find a complete list of available sizes in our catalog above.
Are ORFS fittings reusable?
Many ORFS bodies can be serviced and reassembled if the threads, groove and mating faces remain within specification. Inspect the complete connection and replace the O-ring as required by the fitting manufacturer's instructions or approved maintenance procedure.
Can ORFS connect to JIC, NPT, or ORB ports?
Yes, through the use of specific adapters. We manufacture a full range of transition fittings, such as our FS6403 (ORFS to JIC), FS2404 (ORFS to NPTF), and FS6400 (ORFS to ORB), to integrate ORFS technology into existing systems.
