BSPT Selection Guide: ISO 7-1, BSPP and NPT

BSPT is the tapered British pipe-thread family used where the joint is designed to become pressure-tight on the threads. ISO 7-1 defines thread dimensions, tolerances and designations; ISO 7-2 covers verification with limit gauges. This differs from ISO 228-1 BSPP threads, where a separate sealing surface and seal make the joint pressure-tight.

Functional Cross-Reference to Brennan BSPT Families

Delphi products are generally developed around Brennan-style dimensions and connection functions when a customer requests an equivalent. Brennan's current ISO 7-1 and ISO 1179 category includes male BSPT fittings, male-to-female adapters, elbows, couplings, tees and hollow hex plugs. However, Delphi and Brennan series numbers are not automatically interchangeable: the same number can describe a different end combination.

Straight BSPT connections: compare Delphi 9010 unions and 9031 bushings by complete thread designation, size combination and overall dimensions—not by series number alone.
Directional fittings: compare Delphi 9054, 9062, 9063, 9064 and 9086 by angle, branch/run orientation, end gender and thread standard.
Port closure: compare Delphi 9030T and 9030TCSP plugs by drive style, body form, thread length and drawing dimensions.
Conversion adapters: Delphi BSPT-to-JIC, BSPP and NPTF products require both ends to be verified; “BSP adapter” is not a sufficient production description.

What to Put on an RFQ or Purchase Order

Delphi part number or customer drawing number and revision.
Complete end descriptions, including R, Rc, G, JIC, NPT or NPTF designation and each size.
Body material, zinc-plating requirement or other approved finish, and any salt-spray requirement.
Application medium, operating temperature and required working/test pressure for engineering review.
Annual usage, release quantity, packaging, labeling and inspection-document requirements.

Do not select a fitting from thread diameter alone. Use a thread gauge, confirm taper and pitch, inspect the mating seat or sealing face, and compare the approved drawing before assembly. Sealant type and tightening method must follow the equipment, fitting and sealant manufacturers' instructions.

For recurring BSPT programs, Delphi reviews the approved drawing, connection callouts and inspection requirements before production. CNC machining and thread verification are controlled in-house; forged blanks are sourced from qualified external partners where the body design requires forging.

Thread control: verify the specified standard, size, taper and usable thread length with the agreed gauges and inspection plan.
Conversion fittings: inspect each end independently because BSPT-to-JIC, BSPP or NPTF adapters combine different sealing systems.
Finish: standard zinc plating is performed in-house; thicker zinc or zinc-nickel options can be quoted when longer salt-spray performance is required.
Documentation: inspection records, material documentation, samples and packaging specifications can be defined in the quotation and purchase order.

Common BSPT Specification Questions

Are BSPT and NPT interchangeable?

No. They use different thread profiles and often different pitches. Even where nominal diameters appear similar, the complete standard, taper, pitch and mating component must match.

Does every female British pipe port use Rc tapered threads?

No. British-thread equipment may use ISO 7-1 tapered or parallel internal threads, or ISO 228-1 G threads with a separate seal. Identify the actual port specification and sealing geometry before ordering.

Can Delphi quote a Brennan-style BSPT replacement?

Yes, as a drawing-based equivalent project. Send the complete Brennan part number plus the dimensional drawing or an approved sample. Delphi will cross-check end connections, dimensions, material and finish rather than assuming a match from the series number.
